| Inside a vacuum chamber (between the poles of the magnet), a radiofrequency electric field "kicks" (accelerates) the ions twice in each orbit. This increases both their energy and the radius of their orbit. At the outer edge of the cyclotron the electrons are removed from the ions, resulting in high-speed protons emerging from the cyclotron. |
